Thinking about learning to kitesurf? Good. Now think bigger – because if you’re going to learn, you might as well learn in one of the most exhilarating kitesurfing spots in the world. Beginner kitesurf lessons in Essaouira are in a league of their own. Welcome.

Why Essaouira? The spot, the wind, the challenge

There’s a saying among kitesurfers: “If you can kitesurf in Essaouira, you can kitesurf everywhere.” And people aren’t wrong.

Essaouira sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, where strong, consistent winds meet a wide open beach and powerful ocean. It’s not for the faint-hearted – but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Learning to kitesurf here means you’re building real skills, in real conditions, from day one. Master the kite in Essaouira and the rest of the world’s spots will feel like a bonus.

What actually happens in your beginner kitesurf lessons?

This is the question most beginners are afraid to ask. What will I actually be doing? Will I be in the water straight away? How long until I’m actually riding?

Here’s the honest answer: kitesurfing has a learning curve, but it’s a structured one. At Happy Kite, we break it down into clear stages so you always know where you are and what’s coming next. Each lesson is two hours – and on windy days, you can book more than one session to really make the most of the conditions.

Here’s how the journey typically unfolds:

Lesson 1: Safety, equipment & kite control on the sand

Before you go anywhere near the water, you need to understand your kite. Your first lesson covers the essentials – how the equipment works, safety procedures, and how to control the kite on the sand. It might not sound glamorous, but this foundation is everything. Your instructor will walk you through everything from scratch – no experience needed, no silly questions.

Lesson 2: Kite control in the water & body dragging

Now things get exciting. You’ll take your kite control into the water, learning how to manoeuvre through the ocean using the kite’s power – no board yet, just you and the kite. This stage is called body dragging, and it’s where most beginners have their first “I can’t believe I’m doing this” moment. It’s also where you start to truly feel the wind and understand the ocean.

Lesson 3: Adding the board & the waterstart

The board enters the picture. This is the lesson most beginners are waiting for – and it delivers. You’ll learn how to position the board, how to use the kite to pull yourself up, and how to ride. The waterstart is one of kitesurfing’s most satisfying milestones. It takes patience, but when it clicks, it really clicks.

Next few lessons: Riding downwind, then upwind & transitions

Once you’re up and riding, the progression continues. You’ll start by riding downwind – going with the wind rather than against it – before gradually learning to ride upwind, which is the key to true independence on the water. After that, transitions: turning around, changing direction, and starting to feel like a real kitesurfer.

Which type of lesson should you book?

One of the most common questions we get from beginners is whether to go private, semi-private or group. The short answer: it depends on how fast you want to progress, who you’re travelling with, and your budget. We’ve written a full guide to help you decide – Which kitesurfing lesson is right for me? – but whatever you choose, you’ll be in good hands.

Life between lessons: You’re in Essaouira, after all

Learning to kitesurf takes focus – but it also takes rest. The good news is that Essaouira is a wonderful place to recharge. The ancient medina, the bustling port, the food, the culture – there’s plenty to explore on your days off or between sessions. Learning at your own pace isn’t a compromise here. It’s part of the experience.
