Best season: July & August
If consistent, powerful wind is your priority, July and August are your sweet spot. The North wind dominates during summer, coming in side on shore – making conditions not only reliable but safe, especially for beginners. Temperatures are high, but you’ll barely notice them with the wind in your face.
The trade-off? Essaouira gets busy in summer. Domestic tourism peaks as Moroccans escape the heat of inland cities, and the famous Gnaoua Music Festival draws large crowds too. Expect higher prices for accommodation and a livelier beach. If you don’t mind the buzz, this is prime kitesurf season.
Good season: March to June & September to October
The shoulder months offer a brilliant balance. Wind conditions are still strong and reliable, the beach is noticeably quieter, and prices are friendlier. Spring and early autumn are arguably the sweet spot for those who want great kitesurfing without the summer crowds. This is also when Essaouira feels most like itself – relaxed, unhurried and full of character.
Off season: November to February
Winter in Essaouira is a different experience – but far from a write-off. The wind lightens and a South wind occasionally appears, sometimes bringing rain. Kitesurfing is still possible, but conditions are less predictable. The upside? The waves get bigger, making winter the best time of year for surf in Essaouira. It’s also the quietest and cheapest time to visit, with the whole city feeling much more local and laid-back.
