Never surfed before? Good – everyone starts somewhere. If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and nerves before your first surf lesson, that’s completely normal. The best thing you can do is show up, trust the process, and let the ocean do the rest. Here’s exactly what to expect in your first surf lesson in Essaouira with Happy Kite.
A little theory first
Before you touch the water, your instructor will walk you through the basics – the board, how waves work, the spot you’ll be surfing, and how to position yourself. It sounds simple, but this foundation makes everything that follows much easier. A few minutes of theory saves a lot of confusion in the water.

Practice on the sand
Next comes the part that always gets a smile – practicing on the sand. You’ll learn how to paddle and work on your pop-up, which is the move that takes you from lying on the board to standing up. It feels a little silly on dry land, but by the time you hit the water your body already knows what to do. Muscle memory is everything in surfing.
Into the water
After a warm-up it’s time for the real thing. Your instructor will be right there with you – helping you balance, reading the waves, and guiding you through each step as you start catching your first waves. Don’t worry about wiping out. Everyone does, and it’s half the fun.

A breather in the middle
About halfway through your two-hour lesson, you’ll take a short break on the beach. Drink some water, catch your breath, and ask any questions that have been building up. It’s also a good moment to reset mentally before heading back in for the second half.
Back in the water
The second half is where things start to click. With the basics under your belt, you’ll head back in with more confidence and more time on the waves. Most beginners are surprised by how much they improve between the first and second half of the lesson.

What comes next?
Your first surf lesson is just the beginning. Two hours is enough to get a real feel for the sport – the ocean, the board, the waves. Surfing takes time and patience to learn, and that’s honestly part of what makes it so rewarding. Every session in the water counts, and progress – however gradual – always feels good.
